2010 Primary

2010 Primary Candidates

What is a Primary Election?

A Primary Election precedes a General Election. A Primary Election serves as a method for the political parties to decide which candidates would represent them in a General Election. The next General Election in Texas will be on November 2nd, 2010. In Dallas County, only the Democratic and Republican Parties hold primary elections for their candidates. Other third parties, such as the Libertarian Party, do not hold primaries at this time. In Texas, a voter does not need to specify a political party when they register to vote. This is what is called an Open Primary, which means that a voter is free to vote in either the Republican or Democratic Primary. The Primary Election for the Democratic Party candidates to be represented at the General Election of November 4, 2010 will take place on March 2nd, 2010.

Important Note about United States Senate Seat

Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison has announced her plans to run for Governor in the 2010 election.  If Senator Hutchison resigns her Senate seat, which she has stated she will do, there will be a Special Election to fill the vacated Senate seat.  There is no Primary Election for a Special Election.  We will be creating a page dedicated to the 2010 Special Election, and will update that page as more information becomes available.

What offices will be up for re-election in 2010?

The following list are all of the offices that will be up for re-election in Dallas County in 2010.  Candidates for these offices will appear on the ballot for the 2010 Primary Election.  Candidates who win the 2010 Democratic Primary will then be listed as the official candidate of the Democratic Party on the ballot for the 2010 General Election, which will take place on November 4th, 2010.  If neither candidate for an particular offices fails to achieve over 50% of the voting results, a Runoff Election will be held between the two highest vote-getters to determine the candidate.  We will create a special section if a Runoff Election occurs in 2010.
